Jin Shin Jyutsu - a simple hand-holding practice for emotional harmony
Updated: Oct 16
A gentle five-finger self-care practice for greater awareness, calm and emotional harmony.
Welcome to Balance Imbalances™
Today, I would like to introduce you to Jin Shin Jyutsu, a gentle Japanese art of harmonizing our energy through simple hand-holding practices.
Our everyday experiences, thoughts, emotions, and stresses can influence how we feel.
Jin Shin Jyutsu invites us to slow down, reconnect with ourselves, and restore a sense of inner harmony.
The Five Fingers and Their Emotional Attitudes
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, each finger is traditionally associated with an emotional attitude.
Thumb — Worry
Index Finger — Fear
Middle Finger — Anger
Ring Finger — Grief
Little Finger — Pretense
Pretense refers to when we hide our true feelings behind an outward appearance.
By gently holding each finger, we create an opportunity to acknowledge our emotions and invite greater calm and awareness.
How to Practise Jin Shin Jyutsu
Find a comfortable position. Allow your shoulders to soften and your breathing to flow naturally.
Gently wrap the fingers of one hand around a finger of the opposite hand.
There is no need to squeeze, press, or apply force.
Simply hold, breathe, and allow yourself to be present.
You may hold each finger for one to three minutes, or for as long as feels comfortable.
1. Thumb — Harmonizing Worry
Let us begin with the thumb.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, the thumb is associated with worry, and the stomach and spleen energy patterns.
Gently wrap one hand around the opposite thumb, allowing the other fingers to remain relaxed.
As you hold your thumb, breathe softly.
Healing Affirmation
“I release unnecessary worry. I welcome peace and trust into my life.”
2. Index Finger — Harmonizing Fear
Next, hold your index finger.
The index finger is traditionally associated with fear, and the kidney and bladder energy patterns.
Fear may sometimes appear as uncertainty, self-doubt, or the need to control outcomes.
Hold your index finger gently, without pressure.
As you breathe, remind yourself:
Healing Affirmation
“I am safe in this moment. I welcome courage, clarity, and confidence.”
3. Middle Finger — Harmonizing Anger
Now, hold your middle finger.
The middle finger is associated with anger, and the liver and gallbladder energy patterns.
Anger may arise when we feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or unable to express our needs.
Rather than resisting these feelings, simply acknowledge them.
Breathe gently and affirm:
Healing Affirmation
“I allow frustration to soften. I choose patience, understanding, and inner balance.”
4. Ring Finger — Harmonizing Grief
Now, gently hold your ring finger.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, the ring finger is associated with grief, and the lung and large intestine energy patterns.
Grief can take many forms, including sadness, disappointment, and difficulty letting go.
Give yourself permission to feel without judgment.
As you breathe, silently affirm:
Healing Affirmation
“I honour my feelings. I gently release what I am ready to let go of.”
5. Little Finger — Harmonizing Pretense
Finally, hold your little finger.
The little finger is associated with pretense, and the heart and small intestine energy patterns.
Pretense describes the experience of appearing cheerful or confident while concealing difficult feelings inside.
As you gently hold your little finger, allow yourself to reconnect with your authentic self.
Silently affirm:
Healing Affirmation
“I give myself permission to be genuine. I accept myself with kindness and compassion.”
Making Jin Shin Jyutsu Part of Your Daily Life
The beauty of Jin Shin Jyutsu lies in its simplicity.
You can practise while sitting quietly, resting, or preparing for sleep.
You may hold all five fingers, one after another, or choose the finger that reflects how you are feeling in the moment.
There is no need to force yourself to relax.
Simply be present, breathe naturally, and allow yourself a moment of gentle self-care.
A Gentle Reminder About Emotional Harmony
Remember, emotional harmony does not mean never experiencing worry, fear, anger, or sadness.
It means learning to meet ourselves with greater awareness, patience, and compassion.
